Fungal toenail infections, known as onychomycosis, can be stubborn and unsightly. They often leave nails discolored, brittle, and thickened, leading to discomfort inside of tight-fitting shoes and embarrassment at the beach. At Bayshore Podiatry Center, we offer innovative solutions to restore the appearance of your nails while addressing the underlying infection. Two of the top treatments we recommend for fungal toenails are the KeryFlex Nail Restoration System and DaniPro Nail Polish.

What is KeryFlex Nail Restoration?

KeryFlex is a revolutionary non-invasive nail restoration system designed to improve the appearance of damaged nails, particularly those affected by fungal infections. Unlike other cosmetic treatments, KeryFlex is both functional and aesthetic. Here’s why KeryFlex stands out:

  • Natural Look and Feel: The resin applied to the nail mimics the appearance and the feel of a real, natural toenail. Once hardened, the KeryFlex nail looks smooth and very natural. KeryFlex does not feel as heavy on the toenails as gel and acrylic nail polishes do.
  • Immediate Results: You can walk out of our office with beautiful nails in just one visit! KeryFlex immediately improves the appearance of discolored, misshapen, and/or brittle nails. There’s no need for prolonged treatments with antifungals when you opt for KeryFlex Nail Restoration.
  • Durable and Flexible: The resin is both durable and flexible, meaning it can handle normal activities like walking, running, and even getting a pedicure. The flexibility of the nail gives it a natural feel, so the toenail doesn’t feel suffocated.
  • Breathable and Safe: KeryFlex does not inhibit or hinder toenail growth. The system allows the underlying nail to grow naturally. Since it is applied by one of our podiatrists, you can be confident that it’s safe, even for fungal nails.

The Process of KeryFlex Treatment

Each patient is required to schedule an initial consult with the doctor before proceeding with the KeryFlex Nail Restoration treatment. This is required to ensure that your toenail is an excellent candidate for the treatment and meets the criteria for application.

During the KeryFlex treatment, our podiatrists will first clean and trim the affected toenail. This may include cutting the toenail back and thinning the toenail down as much as possible. This allows for the KeryFlex to have the most natural appearance possible. Then, a bonding agent is applied, followed by the KeryFlex resin. The application of the resin is done slowly as it is shaped to match your natural nail. After each application of the resin, the toenail requires curing under a UV-LED lamp. At the end of the application process, you are left with a smooth, natural-looking nail that’s both attractive and comfortable.

While KeryFlex is a cosmetic solution, it does not treat the fungal infection itself. It is possible to have KeryFlex applied to a fungal toenail while simultaneously treating the underlying infection with an oral antifungal. KeryFlex cannot be combined with topical antifungal medications or fungal laser application. Your doctor will review all your options for treatment in combination with KeryFlex at your initial consultation. Each patient has different desires, and we will cater your treatment around your specific goals!
